Reagents are expensive and often unobtainable. They are made by a handful of companies and the prices are well above the production costs.
Research is not possible without reagents and they constitute a considerable part of lab expenses. That depends on the labs but empiric data suggest around 20%. Lack of that means no research or mush less research.
Right now there is a long wait list for common reagents like RT that is needed for detection of SARS-COV2. And the price is about 5000$ /20 ml which makes it unaffordablefor smaller facilities or research facilities in non-developed countries.
